Solid is the color palette chosen for RED LIGHT, which brings to mind the hue aesthetics utilized by Guillermo del Toro; vivid hot colors contrast with icy cooler choices to create a feast for the ol’ eerie eyeballs. Raimi is fascinating as the philosophical, knife toting, ordered lunatic that terrorizes out young protagonists; a truly great performance that definitely adds immeasurably to the overall piece. RED LIGHT is a fantastic, bite-sized serving of our beloved horror biz that looks great, is well acted, and truly worth your time!

It just really stands out in my opinion, just visually, the performances. It really has this really interesting setup that has that kind of twist towards the ending of the short without giving anything away, that is kind of the best kind of short in my opinion that you watch it and you’re craving more and you’re wanting to see a whole feature out of this. It shows the potential of the filmmaker and as a storyteller if you could tell a very enthralling and interesting story in a short amount of time the potential for someone’s career it’s just infinite at times and that’s another thing that stood out about RED LIGHT. When you see a film like that you are constantly asking what can this director or storyteller do with a feature of the same thing.

This dark and twisted masterpiece shows the darker side of humanity. In only 10 minutes, RED LIGHT touches on real horrors such as homelessness, neglect, selfishness, vanity, kidnap, and murder. As each of these acts was brought to life on the screen I was constantly brought back to that first quote and how it truly relates to what is unfolding before me. As the name suggests, the color red is very present throughout the film in more ways than one. In addition to red, RED LIGHT makes stunning uses of blue and yellow (especially in the home of our sadistic antagonist). The use of these saturated colors evoked a complicated amalgamation of emotions. There is love, and sadness, closeness, and distance, all at the same time. And seeing all these colors together is reminiscent of a horrific funhouse of sorts. There is a lot of potential here for a feature-length film.

One of my favorite shorts of 2020 is hands down the brilliant horror, RED LIGHT. I loved everything about this short. It was so fun, obnoxious, and delightfully twisted. You know it’s a good short when it delivered a better story than most features do and leaves you wanting more!

RED LIGHT captures the human condition and how everyone fears something different. The most unique aspect about this film is the long takes that Kahuam decided to do. Everything was perfectly orchestrated and the tension was really prominent throughout. These long takes also brought out great performances from his actors, allowing their fear to feel real. Kahuam also used lighting and shadowing to enhance the atmosphere.
